Mountaineering: Freedom of the Hills
This is less a book you read cover to cover than one you keep on the shelf and return to before every trip that pushes past your comfort zone. The chapters on rope systems and glacier travel alone are worth the price, and the navigation and weather sections hold up even if you’ve been doing this for years.
It’s not a light read — the prose is closer to a technical manual than a narrative — but that’s exactly the point. If you want one book that covers rope work, navigation, leave-no-trace, and expedition planning without having to piece it together from a dozen blog posts, this is still the one to buy.
